We also collect information you give us about yourself when you engage with our social media platforms, or when you engage directly with us, such as when you volunteer or apply for a job with us or contact us directly via email or phone. We also may collect information given to us about you, such as when a stakeholder tells us about you or your story.
When making a donation to Equality Australia, we may collect the following types of personal information:
- Contact information: Name, address, email address, phone number, demographic information, including that of family members
- Payment information: Credit card details, bank account information, or other payment methods
- Donation information: Amount of your donation, donation history, any special instructions or messages included with your donation, or any other information you share directly with our team
When signing up to updates or taking action on our website, we may collect the following types of personal information:
- Contact information: Name, address, email address, phone number, demographic information
- Action information: Survey data responses, communication or messages with third-party stakeholders (e.g. email your MP), any messages or stories submitted with responses, or any other information you share in taking the action
When communicating with us directly via email or phone (or any other means of direct communication), we may collect the following types of personal information:
- Contact information: Name, address, email address, phone number and demographic information
- Message or story: Messages included within your communication, including any personal story or any information you share, or any other information you share in the communication
We may collect other anonymous information you provide when taking actions, such as surveys, which are clearly labelled as de-identified or anonymous. If you provide your details for us to contact you, then your information may then be identifiable and recorded.
When accepting employment, joining as a volunteer, or being compensated for your time as a partner or stakeholder, we may collect the following types of personal information:
- Contact information: Name, address, email address, phone number for yourself and your emergency contact/s
- Payment information: Credit card details, bank account information, or other payment methods
- Health and employment history information: Pre-existing medical conditions, treatment plans, former employer information

2. USING AND DISCLOSING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
To maintain the trust you place in us, we take care in how we use and disclose your personal information to others.
We use your personal information with your consent, to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, to inform and strengthen our organisation internally, such as monitoring, analysing and researching our effectiveness and impact, and improving our activities for the future, to process and respond to requests, enquiries or complaints received from you and to provide and improve our services and products.
We disclose your personal information with your consent, to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, or confidentially with our agents, suppliers and advisors when they are doing work for us or supplying us services so we can do our work. Some of our suppliers (such as third-party service provider databases we use to store personal information) are based overseas, meaning your personal information may be stored in Australia or overseas.
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.
In rare cases, we may use or disclose personal information where it is reasonably necessary and permitted by law, such as to lessen or prevent serious threats to life, health or safety, or as part of legal proceedings.
We may not be able to do the above things without your personal information. We will only retain your personal information for as long as reasonably necessary in the circumstances.
3. ACCESSING AND UPDATING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
If you receive an email through our mailing list, you can update your subscription options and details, including opting out of receiving communications from us, using the link in the email. You can otherwise update your personal information, or opt-out of receiving communications from us, by contacting us at info@equalityaustralia.org.au.
If you want to check, access, correct the information we hold about you, or request a copy of your data, you can do so by contacting us at info@equalityaustralia.org.au. To the extent we are reasonably able to and provided it does not interfere with the rights of others, we will do our best to honour your request. Information we hold about you should be up to date and accurate. Please advise us in writing of any changes to your information.
We know that honouring your identity is important. For trans and gender diverse people who wish to update their names or details just need to let us know by contacting us at info@equalityaustralia.org.au. We will update our records to make sure your name and pronouns reflect the person you truly are.
4. DATA SECURITY
We implement a variety of technical, physical, and administrative security measures to protect your personal data during and after we receive it. We use encryption and secure servers to safeguard payment transactions and other sensitive information.
5. COOKIES
Our website and social media platforms use cookies, which are small text files created and stored on your computer by your internet browser. These hold information about the pages you view and help personalise your browsing experience. You can disable cookies using the options in your internet browser, although some website functionality may not be available or may not function correctly if you do.
