WA's discrimination laws must catch up
A Bill has been introduced in Western Australia that could finally end the legal discrimination of LGBTQ+ students and staff in religious schools.
It also provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen other protections against discrimination and hate.
WA’s discrimination laws are more than 40 years old and among the weakest in Australia. It’s time they caught up!
The Bill follows a Law Reform Commission review in 2022 which found the Equal Opportunity Act required substantial reform.
We now have an opportunity to bring protections into line with the rest of the country and close the gaps that leave thousands of people vulnerable to discrimination.
Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and equally under the law, and every community facing vilification and abuse should have the protection of the law.
Write to your MP and urge them to support strong, effective laws that protect LGBTIQ+ people and everyone in WA from discrimination and hate.
