Everyone should feel welcome in our public spaces. When a venue is named for a person, it is important that the person reflects our values as a society.

Court has repeatedly made comments that demonise the LGBTI community within the sport and community broadly. Court said that being gay is an ungodly “lust for the flesh” and that LGBT tendencies in young people were “all the devil”. Court said that LGBTI activists are trying to target children, adding “That’s what Hitler did. That’s what communism did.”

These are not comments that Australians can be proud of. We join high profile tennis players including champions Serena Williams and Billie Jean King in calling for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed.

Our venues need to be inclusive for all. Sport has always played an important role in Australia as a leveller between people from different backgrounds. The arena isn’t just about tennis. Outside of the Australian Open, the arena hosts basketball and netball games, concerts, dance competitions, and business events year-round.

Melbourne and Olympic Parks even made a statement saying that they don’t support Margaret Court’s comments.

That’s why we’re calling on the Melbourne and Olympic Parks to take the next step, and rename the Margaret Court arena to Equality Arena. The change will reflects our values as a country, something we can all be proud of.
