The Queensland parliament will soon vote on a bill to make birth certificate laws fairer for trans and gender diverse people.
If passed, the law will:
- remove the cruel and unnecessary requirement for trans people to have surgery on their reproductive organs before they can update their gender marker;
- allow gender diverse people to choose a descriptor that best reflects their gender; and
- allow better recognition of same-sex, trans and gender diverse parents.
But anti-equality lobbyists are trying to scuttle this reform by misrepresenting the law and spreading misinformation about its impacts.
Everyone deserves to be recognised for who they are. If enough of us come together, we can secure fairer birth certificate laws for LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders.
